Melanie Adley is an indexer at Ideas on Fire, where she uses her own knowledge of diverse fields in dialogue with an author's expertise to craft rich indexes that reflect the scholarship's interdisciplinary depth and complexity.
Melanie is based in New York City, heading the English Department of the German School Manhattan. Her teaching and scholarly activity unite around an investment in practically realizing spaces and policies that make education accessible to all students. She uses an intersectional approach to investigate ways to destabilize dominant, marginalizing narratives in curriculum and to radicalize pedagogical practices that would result in classrooms where every student would participate in critical analysis and world changing.
She is the current and founding chair of the National Women's Studies Association's Feminist Pedagogy Interest Group and is committed to the #K12feminism movement.
Melanie has a PhD in German Literature and spent four years as associate director of the Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies Program and Alice Paul Center at the University of Pennsylvania and the Women's and Gender Studies Program at Vanderbilt University.
She is particularly knowledgeable in feminist and queer theory, women's, gender, and sexuality studies, disability studies, critical pedagogy, and nineteenth- and twentieth-century German studies.
