Akiko Yamagata (she/her) is a copyeditor at Ideas on Fire, where she uses her interdisciplinary background to help scholars in the social sciences and humanities produce manuscripts that make an impact.

Akiko has over a decade of experience editing scholarly and general nonfiction manuscripts. She runs Graphite Editing, where she provides developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, and proofreading for scholars, students, nonprofits, and publishers. She also edits and checks translations from modern Japanese and classical Japanese.

She is on the Board of Governors of the Editorial Freelancers Association and coordinates the Boston chapter. She is also a member of ACES Society for Editing and the Society of Writers, Editors, and Translators.

Akiko earned her MA from Harvard University in East Asian studies with a specialization in Japanese art and culture and her BA from Williams College in political science and sociology.

In her spare time, she teaches in the Art and Medicine Program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
